- This seminar provides an overview of the English novel as a genre during the twentieth century. Starting from innovative techniques of depicting consciousness in the works of the great modernists such as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and D.H. Lawrence, we will trace the developments of the genre through postmodernist and contemporary writing. Aspects to be considered will be the novel's relationship and attitudes towards language/text, authorship, and reality, but also its treatment of vital issues of contemporary society such as gender, class, and technology.
