WPF CE-MA-TA-CMS ab 1
Prerequisites / Organisational information:
Prerequisite for this course is knowledge of Python (as e.g. obtained by our "Scientific Programming with PYTHON" course).
Contents:
This course provides a concise introduction to continuum mechanics including vector and tensor calculus. This is one of the foundations for comprehending the finite element method (FEM), which will be derived in a way that is appropriate for solving solid mechanics problems. In this course we focus on introducing all the fundamental steps (formulation of balance equations, constitutive equations, discretization, setting up the weak form, numerical integration, assembling the stiffness matrix) for FEM solution of small-strain elastic deformation problems. The course is accompanied by hands-on tutorials where the students learn how to implement the lecture content in their own PYTHON finite-element routines and at the same time deepen their understanding of the lecture content. At the end of this course the students will have written a fully functional FEM program, which we then use to study benchmark systems and to simulate different mechanical systems. A critical review of their own results will help the students to understand strengths and limitations of the FEM simulation tools.

Contents:
These lectures provide a broad overview of simulation methods operating on length scales from the atomistic to the continuum scale. Simulation methods introduced include Molecular Dynamics, equilibrium and kinetic Monte Carlo simulation, mesoscopic methods such as e.g. Dislocation Dynamics and the Phase Field method, and continuum-level modeling of materials behavior in Finite Element simulations. The introduction of methods operating on different scales is complemented by a discussion of multiscale approaches, i.e. the linking of models operating on different scales. For most of the tutorials ‘Python’ will be used as programming language, which will be introduced in a separate short course (see above). This course is accompanied by practicals where the students will have the opportunity to numerically implement ‘one-scale’ models in a hands-on manner. This will be complemented by examples of information passing between different scales and the construction of simple multiscale models.

This course will be held as a compact block seminar during the first two weeks of lecture time, with each week covering the whole course. So you can pick the week you want to attend the course. This course is highly recommended for all students who take part in WW8 courses (e.g. MuSim 1 or FEM 1) and who don't have any prior PYTHON knowledge. Since only limited places are available for this course you have to sign up for this course on StudOn here: https://www.studon.fau.de/crs1648533.html

Prerequisites / Organisational information:
The Python introduction course is not mandatory, but it is a prerequisite for taking any WW8 courses to have a solid foundation of PYTHON programming. We will evaluate your proficiency through a small test, which will help you to judge if the WW8 courses (as e.g. FEM 1/2 and MuSim 1/2) are suitable for you.
Since only limited places are available for this course you have to sign up for this course on StudOn here: http://www.studon.uni-erlangen.de/crs1308686.html
