Inhalt:

The lecture enables the students to gain an insight into the mechanical properties and behavior of materials used for engineering and technological applications. The course aims to bring together materials science and engineering perspectives towards understanding, design and application of materials. A high level of student involvement through presentations ensures hands on participation in the course. The following broad topics will be covered during the lecture • introduction to tensors and basics of continuum mechanics • elasticity • plasticity and failure • fracture mechanics • mechanical behaviour of metals • fatigue • creep

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

At the end of course, the students can expect to achieve the following goals: • develop a basic understanding of tensors, tensorial equations and apply them to describe material phenomena like e.g. elasticity and plasticity • learn to analyze and interpret simple experiments like tensile test, compression test, shear test etc. • understand the mechanics of different material phenomena like elasticity, plasticity, fatigue, creep and failure • assess and evaluate various criteria for describing the mechanics of materials • link material phenomena to the underlying physics and microstructure at various length scales – e.g. plasticity to the motion of dislocations
