  • Basics of chemistry and physics of surfaces
  • Surface properties relevant for protein and cell attachment

  • Protein, Protein adsorption on biomaterials, fundamentals

  • The foreign body reaction

  • Effect of chemical composition, topography and stiffness on cell attachment

  • Ion release effects from biomaterial surfaces

  • Surface modification strategies for implants and scaffolds

  • Biomedical coatings and bioactive surfaces

  • Hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces

  • Characterization methods for biomaterial surfaces

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

The lecture enables the students to acquire basic knowledge on different aspects of biomaterial interfaces, in particular about the interaction between different biomaterials (polymers, metals, ceramics and glasses) with the biological environment. Protein adsorption mechanisms and the basics of the interaction between a biomaterial (implant) and tissues (foreign body reaction) are covered. The course covers also funvtionalisation strategies for biomaterials and the student will have an appreciation of the relevant surface properties affecting protein adsorption and cell attachment, including chemical composition, surface topography and stiffness.
