Contents
Simulations are becoming more and more important in various fields of engineering as a fast, cheap and flexible alternative to real-world experiments. In order to successfully carry out such simulations, a profound knowledge of the respective physical models, numerical discretization and solution methods, and performance-aware programming techniques is indispensable.
The course "Simulation and Scientific Computing 2" covers these essential aspects of simulations in detail on the basis of typical engineering problems:
  • Introduction to multigrid methods: These algorithms are an extremely powerful tool to solve vast equation systems in reasonable time.

  • Theory and application of the finite element method: FEM is one of the most widely applied discretization methods for partial differential equations. A large spectrum of problems, arising from various technical application fields such as medical engineering, aircraft and vehicle construction, can be treated with its help.

  • Computational fluid dynamics: In this area, the lattice Boltzmann method is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its simplicity and suitability for high performance computing.

  • Molecular dynamics: Computational methods for large-scale particle simulations are presented.
