- For many decades, American modernism was associated with authors such as Faulkner, Hemingway, and Dos Passos. Black writers played only a minor role. This changed in the 1960s and 1970s. In this seminar, we will seek to elucidate the characteristics of black modernism and the Harlem Renaissance. Intellectuals and novelists like W.E.B. Du Bois, Alain Locke, Zora Neale Hurston, Nella Larsen, Jean Toomer, and Richard Wright radically changed our understanding of modernism.
We will read the following novels:
Jean Toomer, Cane
Nella Larsen, Quicksand
Richard Wright, Native Son
