- The books on this syllabus are all taken from the American Library Association’s list of “The 100 most frequently challenged books of 1990-2000,” the rankings (in parentheses below) reflecting how often each book has been challenged by local parent groups, schools, churches, and other organizations. It would be tempting to read these challenges as evidence of American “puritanism,” but the story is of course more complicated. The books are widely read in part because of the challenges. As is so often the case in the history of modern art, their notoriety and controversy only add to their avantgarde appeal. We will read these novels with an eye towards Foucault’s argument about the institutional mechanics of repression: namely that repression is not silencing but productive, and that pleasure and power, far from being antithetical, define each other’s scope and place.
We will also discuss contemporary accounts of the socio-cultural dynamics of taste and the politics of canon formation. What is often at stake in discussions of censorship, especially in the United States, is the concept of childhood and its place in the struggle between Federal and local authorities to define educational and legal norms. Thus it is no surprise that these novels, like so much American literature, are primarily about children.
