- For the Victorians, as for us, popular myths are the means through which cultural anxieties and desires can be articulated. This seminar will focus on the forms and functions of Victorian myths both in literary texts and in everyday life (including the meanings and uses of these myths in today's culture). We will explore the cultural transformation of fantasy fiction into popular myths, examine the functions of Christmas, the myths of womanhood (including Queen Victoria as a female 'star') and the potent myths surrounding the name of Charles Dickens (and popular authorship in general). We will also reflect critically on approaches to Victorian literature and culture through an engagement with a variety of methodologies used in recent secondary material.
It is essential that all students read and reflect upon the relevant text before each class. All participants are expected to enroll for a seminar presentation which should last between 10 and 15 minutes including time for questions. A course syllabus, a selected bibliography and additional material will be made available in our library (C 602) and on StudOn at the beginning of the semester.
