Sebastian Barry is one of the leading contemporary writers of Ireland. Published to critical acclaim, his novels and theatre plays may be looked upon as literary attempts to diagnose the diseases of Irish history. Basing his literary works on the events of the Easter Rising of 1916 and the de Valera era, Barry is interested in the literary representation of both individual and national traumata. In class, we will focus on three of his novels: The Whereabouts of Ewan McNulty (1998), A Long Long Way (2005) and The Secret Scripture (2008). We will also discuss some of Barry’s plays among them The Steward of Christendom (1995) and Our Lady of Sligo (1998).
