Contents
The lecture covers the historically variable concept of literary studies in the US from the early 19th century to the present. Tracing the changes in the values and functions of literary analysis, the lecture presents the practice of reading literature as an ongoing intellectual debate and provides students with an understanding of its history and the rhetorical gestures it employs. In order to allow students to actively learn "the language of the game" and to help them engage in intellectual debate at an advanced level, the lecture is supplemented by an Übung in which assumptions and implications of individual texts from the history of North American poetics and literary studies are discussed. Beginning with American poetics from the Early Republic through the Post-Civil War Era, the lecture proceeds to cover the Early Professional Era in Literary Studies (1870-1920), Modern American Criticism (New Criticism and the fate of Marxism), the Post World War II Era (Structuralism and the Growth of Theory), developments since the 1970s (the canon debates, feminism, black aesthetics, postcolonial theory) as well as more recent developments like the ethical turn and New Formalism. The module closes with a 20 minute oral exam.
All materials will be available on StudOn at the beginning of the semester.
