- Someone as disoriented as Steven Patrick Morrissey, someone as drawn to illegal substances as Nick Cave, or someone as dissatisfied as Jordan Dreyer (the latter’s dissatisfaction may at least partly be explained by the fact that he was born in Grand Rapids, MI) – there have been numerous great lyricists in the history of rock music. However, music has hardly ever been central to discussions of American literature. In this seminar, we will try to elucidate the role music can play for a deeper understanding of literature.
- Recommended literature
- We will concentrate on the following texts:
Greil Marcus, Mystery Train: Images of America in Rock ‘n’ Roll Music
Jack Kerouac, On the Road
Bret Easton Ellis, Less Than Zero In addition, we will analyze texts by American rock journalists in order to find out whether they can be regarded as adding to our understanding of America.
