Contents
This Seminar will be taught by a Visiting Fulbright Professor. Participants will convene for intensive sessions between April 15 and May 27.

Our culture shapes the ways we view the world, and this cultural lens is shaped by historical, economical, cosmological and sociological forces. Accordingly, the ways we describe our world are equally shaped by cultural factors. This reality has shaped the history of North America. Colonialism, in its simplest paradigm, is when people leave one placefor another land with the idea of taking possession of it; when they do this, what transpires will be shaped by their cultural lens: how they see this new place and the people who live there.

This seminar will examine a number of texts written from varying cultural points of view that describe the landscapes of North America over a long period of time. As we do, we will explore the diverse visions of the world that have come to be called “American literature.” However, as with all attempts to recognize and understand alternative points of view as we engage in cultural studies, we will also consider our own cultural lenses.

Recommended literature
Our central novels will be Ken Kesey’s Sometimes a Great Notion and Louise Erdrich’s Tracks.
Other, shorter, readings will be assigned to supplement our discussions of these two works. We will also examine a number of works in film.
