Contents
Much of what is conventionally labeled African American cultural production has recently been (re)considered as a specific ‘mixed-race’ tradition in American culture. Due to the hegemonic ideology of the “one-drop rule,” US mixed-race subjects have in the past often been considered unequivocally ‘black,’ and racial mixing has been prominently thematized in the figure of the “tragic mulatto” (a bi-racial character doomed to fail), for instance in the novel of passing. Currently, more attention is paid to the specificities of mixed-race discourses in culture and literature, and the constructivist approaches of critical race studies and African American studies have been re-centered on mixed-race studies.

This seminar provides, first, an introduction to the field of critical mixed-race studies discussing multi-ethnicity, hybridity, and adjacent concepts. Second, we will discuss representations that address mixed-race discourses in various media and across time. Third, we will develop a comparative perspective that moves beyond the black-white dichotomy as a prominent pattern in American racial discourse in order to gain a more nuanced picture.
