- This seminar will introduce you to both literaryand cultural studies approaches as a means of understanding and re-evaluatingdiverse aspects of Shakespeare’s work and his status as ‘author’. We will not only examine the textual structures and historical contexts of Shakespeare’s plays but also consider their significance in constructing ‘Shakespeare’ as a cultural icon. In order to gain understanding of the Bard’s circulation withinthe popular culture of the 20th/21st centuries, thisclass explores various contemporary phenomena and situates them in theirrespective media contexts. Topics to be discussed include: ‘Shakespeare’ ascultural myth and commodity, theories of authorship, the politics of gender andsexuality, Shakespeare and film adaptation, British heritage, high versuspopular culture and literary tourism. Allparticipants are expected to enroll for a short oral presentation/ a studygroup before the beginning of term. A class schedule and a bibliography will bemade available online.
