- The aim of this seminar is to explore the various forms and functions of Victorian fantasy literature in the 'classic' age of Realism.
We will place the texts in their context within the historical development of popular genres (such as ghost stories, fairy tales and gothic romances)
and within contemporary cultural discourses (e.g. class conflict, progress vs. degeneration, 'deviant' sexualities etc.). We will also discuss the cultural
transformation of fantasy fiction into modern myths by analysing appropriations and adaptations of fantasy fiction in modern cinema.
All participants are expected to enrol for a short oral presentation. The course syllabus and a bibliography will be made available in our library (C602) and
on StudOn at the beginning of the semester.
