Contents
John Fowles (1926-2005) is counted amgonst the most influential of British post-war writers. His novels have won both critical acclaim (some scholars credit him with having invented the postmodern British novel) and public success. They were also turned into highly popular movies. This course will focus on three of his novels as a means to familiarize students with Fowles’s themes of existentialism, mythology, history, meta-narrative voices, and the relationship between science and the arts. We will also discuss Fowles's The Tree, which is part memoir and part nature essay.
Additional readings from Fowles's non-fictional prose will be made available at the beginning of the semester.
All three novels have to be read before the first class meeting.
