- This seminar intends to present a first survey of the developments of English poetry in 20th century. After a brief historical recap of the most significant phases in the history of English poetry (Petrarchan poetry, the Shakespearean sonnet, Metaphysical Poetry, Augustan didactic poetry, Romanticism) we will focus on the innovative character of poetry towards the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. The list of writers we will discuss in class comprises Thomas Hardy, T.S. Eliot, Yeats, Ezra Pound, Ford Madox Ford, W.H. Auden, Stephen Spender, Dylan Thomas, Philip Larkin, Paul Muldoon and Simon Armitage. A complete list of the poems we will analyze will be published on Studon. Master students must also attend my lecture “Der Englische Roman im 20. Jahrhundert”.
