English Modernism reflects the many paradigm shifts in both science and philosophy. When Virginia Woolf said, "On or about December 1910, human nature changed", she referred to the intense changes the modern world had brought about. "Identity" (of men, women, nation, cultures), "reality", "truth", "history","art", "ethics", and "morality", all these terms had to be redefined in the light of the new ideas developed by modernist thinkers. In this seminar we will study the various forms of English modernism by reading novels, lyrical texts, and dramas as literary representatives of a ‘period’ influenced by both tradition and innovation. The list of works to be analyzed includes James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and essential episodes of Ulysses (1922), Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse (1927), Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1902), T.S. Eliot’s "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" (1917) and selected parts of The Waste Land (1922). The drama will be represented by G.B. Shaw's Man and Superman (1903).
