Contents
In the turbulent decade of the Sixties, which was marked by complex cultural and political changes against the backdrop of Cold War culture and politics, the year 1968 stands out: The various protests for civil liberties and the rebellion against violent state repression reached a new high, and mass protest and uprisings occurred across the globe. Some of the activists were driven by a political agenda of decolonization, others by a youthful desire to rebel against the older generation's norms and values that were considered rigid, authoritarian and bourgeois. In the U.S., 1968 was the year of the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, of violent clashes between minorities and the police, mass demonstrations in opposition to the Vietnam war, as well as a year of sex, drugs, and rock and roll as cliché would have it. In this class we will discuss political protest movements (ranging from the African-American civil cights movement, the American Indian Movement and the women's liberation movement to the anti-war alliances) and countercultural phenomena, practices, and projects that emerged from an anti-establishment social dynamic such as communes, hippies, drug culture, to name just a few. We will analyze a variety of cultural products (factographic and fictional texts, music, film, documentaries) and discuss diverging contemporary evaluations of that famous year.
