Lectures:
Inhalt:
Quasicrystals are well-ordered structures without translational symmetry. They might posses interesting rotational symmetry that are not allowed in periodic crystals. Since there is no unit cell in a quasicrystal, many theoretical concepts that originally have been developed for periodic structures cannot be applied to quasicrystals. Furthermore, additional degrees of freedom exist in quasicrystals leading to additional modes called phasons. Topics:
1. Space Groups of periodic crystals
2. The discovery of quasicrystals
3. The history of aperiodic tilings
4. Constructing quasicrystalline patterns: Inflation methods and projections from hyperspace
5. General symmetry properties of quasicrystals
6. Additional degrees of freedom in quasicrystals
7. Elastic properties and defects in quasicrystals
8. Stability of quasicrystals
9. Tailoring colloidal quasicrystals
10. A phase field crystal model for quasicrystals
11. Applications of quasicrystals
12. What is a crystal? Definitions, recent discussions, and outlook
Lernziele und Kompetenzen:
Students
comprehend an interesting physical topic in a short time frame
identify and interpret the appropriate literature
select and organize the relevant information for the presentation
compose a presentation on the topic at the appropriate level for the audience
use the appropriate presentation techniques and tools
criticize and defend the topic in a scientific discussion
