- In this course we are going to investigate the intersection of different concepts of hope and politics in American literary and cultural productions throughout US-American history. More precisely, we will analyze possible conceptualizations of hope and how these concepts are implemented politically. We will deal with cases from the abolition movement, women’s suffrage and emancipation movements, the civil rights movement, Barack Obama’s Audacity of Hope, as well as examples from contemporary popular culture. Our overall goal will be the critical assessment of how hope in all these discourses functions as a forceful political stimulant that either serves to reinforce or subvert established power relations within US-American culture.
