- "Fin de siècle," murmured Lord Henry.
"Fin du globe," answered his hostess.
"I wish it were fin du globe," said Dorian, with a sigh. "Life is a great disappointment"
(Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, ch.15)
In this seminar we will study the poetry at the end of the nineteenth century. The Fin de Siècle not only marks the end of the Victorian Era but is also a peak in the depressive and apocalyptic sentiment of the 1890s onwards. Inspired by French avant-garde movements, Fin de Siècle ranges among a number of radical ideas like symbolism, aestheticism, and decadence. We will look at philosophers like Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, and investigate their ideas as well as the human condition (e.g. ennui, pessimism, decay, degeneration).
The most prominent figure of this time is undoubtedly Oscar Wilde, however, we will explore the waters of other less-known poets and discuss the reasons for their repression in the literary canon.
