Mechanical activation of Beta2 Integrin

Is integrin activation upon ligand binding alone or by additional mechanical stimulation necessary for intracellular cytoskeletal rearrangement? These events have implications on leukocyte arrest and migration on the endothelium as well as leukocyte extravation to tissue injury sites. Studying integrins in leukocytes will provide an unique opportunity to define their signaling/structural properties. Understanding the influence of external stresses on cell receptors will throw light on beta2 integrin's role in cell adhesion and migration to inflammatory sites.
