Determination of Prostate Cancer Growth Inhibitors from Saw Palmetto Berry Extract (SPBE) Saw Palmetto Berry Extract (SPBE) is used for prostate health and treatment of urinary tract infections, nonbacterial prostitis, and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) in man. SPBE decreases testosterone concentration and prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels. Animal studies suggest that SPBE inhibits the binding of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to its receptor and the conversion of testosterone to DHT by inhibiting the activity of 5alpha-reductase. The efficiency of SPBE as characterized by urologic symptoms is similar to the standard treatment with finasteride but with less adverse side effects. Using different prostate cancer cell lines, we investigated the influence of SPBE and its most abundant phytosterols: beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol and cholesterol in cell proliferation assays. | Project manager: Prof. Wolfgang Goldmann, Ph.D.
