The particular exercises are arranged in the sequence of the lecture. The first exercise deals with the subject of the stoichiometry and energetics of microbiological reactions. For an acetate contaminated industrial wastewater a calculation of all relevant characteristic quantities is done, including the corresponding balances.
The second exercise deals with microbial kinetics in a chemostat. The chemostat is fed with a waste water containing only biodegradable organic material with a certain BOD5-value. The objective is to analyse the chemostat´s performance with regard to its effluent quality.
Both the 3rd and 4th exercise deal with the design of a one-stage activated sludge plant for nitrification and denitrification according to a qualified design basis (ATV-Arbeitsblatt A131).
The subject of the 5th exercise is biofilm kinetics. The purpose of this exercise is the derivation of the essential material transport equations for a biofilm. Then several examples are used to calculate the specific substrate stream and biomass in a biofilm.
Finally the 6th exercise deals with biological waste air purification by means of biofilters and bioscrubbers. For a known, alcoholic-contaminated waste air flow both apparatuses, mentioned above, have to be designed. An estimation of their specific energy demands has also to be done.
