- Inhalt
- During the English Restoration (1660-1689), literary conventions were radically redefined. This seminar will take a broad look at the major literary forms at the time. The reopening of the theatres, following the Puritan Interregnum, introduced new theatrical genres; lyrical forms thrived as poets struggled to find ways of combining classical and modern interests; and the growing book market allowed writers of prose to experiment with forms of the essay, scientific writing, and early attempts at novelistic fiction that took inspiration from romance and the epos, amongst others. The reading list will include authors like Behn, Dryden, Milton, Bunyan, Butler, Wycherley, Congreve, Davys, and Dunton. Prior to the beginning of the semester, students should have finished reading the title story in Aphra Behn, Oroonoko and Other Writings (Oxford UP, World's Classics) as well as John Bunyan, The Pilgrim's Progress (Oxford UP, World's Classics).
