- Automatic control is about taking influence on the dynamic behaviour of engineering processes such that they become more valuable.
Thus, automatic control is a prerequisite for most of todays engineering solutions -- in an industrial context (e.g. chemical processes) as well as for consumer products (e.g. optical data storage devices).
The lecture focuses attention on process dynamics that are given by linear time invariant differential equations. We will draw from system theory (frequency domain, time domain) to mathematically characterize desirable behaviour (e.g. stability, bandwidth, dc-gain). Implicitly, we obtain a characterization of the yet unknown controller in a closed-loop configuration with the process model. The
core question becomes how to "solve these design equations".
The lecture will discuss this question in depth and from a variety of perspectives, with an emphasis on mathematical methods (e.g. algebraic solutions to pole placement) but also including heuristic approaches (e.g. Ziegler-Nichols parameterization of PID controllers).
