General Introduction to Biomaterials

  • Definitions and background concepts

  • Metals in medical applications: processing and properties

  • Ceramics and glasses in medical applications: processing and properties

  • Polymers in medical applications: processing and properties

  • Composite materials

  • Case in point: biomaterial for orthopaedic devices

  • Biodegradable and biological materials

  • Scaffolds for tissue engineering

  • Porous materials in medical applications

  • Introduction to biomaterial-tissue interfaces

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

The lecture enables the students to acquire basic knowledge on the processing, microstructure and properties of a wide range of biomaterials, e.g. materials for biomedical applications. The student will have an appreciation of the specific properties required for successful biomedical applications of materials gaining understanding of biocompatibility concepts. The student will be able to select biomaterials for specific biomedical applications, e.g. bone implants, stents, wound healing materials, tissue scaffolds.
