Lectures:

Empfohlene Voraussetzungen:

Basics in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. Students of other subjects (Chemical- and Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, Life Science Engineering, Energy Technology, Computational Engineering) can participate.

Inhalt:

  • properties of light; properties of molecules; Boltzmann distribution;
  • geometric optics; lasers (HeNe, Nd:YAG, dye, frequency conversion); continuous wave and pulsed lasers;

  • photoelectric effect; photodetectors (photomultiplier, photodiode, CCD, CMOS, image intensifier); digital image processing; image noise and resolution;

  • shadowgraphy and schlieren techniques;

  • elastic light scattering (Mie scattering, Rayleigh thermometry, nanoparticle size and shape, droplet sizing);

  • Raman scattering (species concentration, temperature, diffusion);

  • incandescence (thermal radiation, pyrometry, particles);

  • velocimetry (flow fields);

  • absorption, fluorescence (temperature, species, concentration)

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

Students gain technical and technological skills in the field of optical techniques for the measurement of state and process variables in thermodynamic / energy processes and the investigation of these processes. They

  • are familiar with the state of the art and latest developments in optical measurement techniques applied in thermodynamics / energy processes

  • can assess the applicability of measurement techniques in different environments

  • can apply different optical measurement techniques in thermodynamic processes and design experiments

  • can evaluate data gained from optical measurement techniques and assess the quality of data

  • know interdisciplinary approaches in the fields of optics, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer and fluid mechanics

  • are qualified to perform applied and fundamental research and development tasks in industry and at university in the field of optical measurement techniques for thermodynamic / energy processes
