Contents
The United States particularly is often regarded a country of unlimited mobility or a "nation on the move;" (cultural) mobility in North America however frequently transgresses national boundaries. In this class, we will discuss selected US-American and Canadian texts from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries which negotiate mobility in and beyond the US. We will especially focus on road narratives, political and autobiographical writings by African American fugitives, and literature which focuses on issues of (im)migration. Taken together these case studies represent various phenomena of mobility: legal and illegal border crossings, geographical and social mobility, cultural transfer and intercultural exchange. Our analyses of the primary materials will be guided by theoretical texts on mobility studies, cultural mobility, and cultural exchange.
