Inhalt:
Basic Module 2 contains a lecture on the history, concept, and programmatics of “North American Literary Studies“. Methodology and theoretical approaches of the discipline are developed systematically with regard to central paradigms of literary studies (author, reader, text, context).
The lecture is accompanied by a course which covers the North American engagement with imaginative literary writing from the 19th century to the present. It uses key texts to familiarize students with methods and theories and covers thematic fields central to U.S. and Canadian culture as well as to the Anglophone Caribbean.
Lernziele und Kompetenzen:
Students develop an overview over North American Literary Studies and the historic evolvement of approaches and methodologies specific to the discipline.
In the accompanying course students acquire insight into central canonical works of American Literary Studies and Literary Theory and practice critical uses of respective categories and approaches.
