Prerequisites / Organisational information
This seminar fulfils the following requirements: Das Hauptseminar gehört in den folgenden Studiengängen jeweils zu folgenden Modulen:
  • MA North American Studies - Culture and Literature: Modul(e) 4,7

  • MA The Americas/Las Américas: Modul(e) 4

  • BA English and American Studies: Hauptmodul A Literature oder Culture.(Zulassungsvoraussetzung: Zwischenmodul II)

Für BA-Studierende ist an diesen Kurs auch eine "Independent Study Group" angeschlossen.
Active participation in discussions, a topical presentation in class, a term paper (15-20 pages). Regular attendance required, a maximum of two absences is permissible.
The presentation must be sent to me (daniel.gossel@ifa.fau.de) at least one day in advance. The working language in class is English.

Contents
The seminar takes a broad approach to mass-mediated political communication in American society. The aim is to study the impact of media on various aspects of political life, in normal times and times of crisis. The focus will be on federal government and national politics, leaving out state and local politics. The seminar is about the interplay between media and politics, about how political institutions, regulations and procedures affects journalists and media organizations, and how the media, in turn, influence politicians and their work in all branches of government.

  • Historical foundations

  • Purpose and functions of mass media

  • Press freedom & media regulation

  • Mass media system (Print, Audio, Audiovisual)

  • Media economy & ownership / public broadcasting

  • Ethnic media (Hispanic, African American)

  • Journalism & media bias

  • Role of mass media in election campaigns

  • Media & political scandals

  • Media coverage of international news & U.S. foreign policy

  • War reporting

  • Mass media & new media
