Contents
The uncanny designates something that is simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar, something that was concealed and hidden, but has come to light – in Freudian terms: the return of the repressed. In this seminar, we will explore the ways in which different literary genres (fairy tale, urban gothic, horror fiction) ‘articulate’ and interpret the sensations, feelings and emotions associated with the uncanny. We will study individual texts in the context of contemporary discourses on (the uncanny effects of) capitalism, ‘deviant’ sexualities, ‘degeneration’ and new technologies. We will also examine how the texts have been read by modern critics and recreated by modern film.
It is essential that all students read and reflect upon the texts before each class. All participants are expected to enroll for a short oral presentation. A course syllabus, a bibliography and additional material will be made available online at the beginning of the semester.

Recommended literature
Texts:Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol;Robert Louis Stevenson, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde; Bram Stoker, Dracula.
