The drama of the Restoration period, especially Restoration Comedy, entertained its audience with a high degree of both humour and wit, with sexual innuendoes, and with a lascivious attitude towards life. In this seminar, we will analyse in which way the plays mirror the socio-historical conditions of their time. The interpretation of comedies such as William Wycherley’s The Country Wife (1675) and The Plain Dealer (1676), George Etherege’s The Man of Mode of Sir Foplin Flutter (1676), William Congreve’s Love for Love (1695) and The Way of the World (1700) will enable us to understand the role of the ‘Restoration Rake’, the mentality of the ‘libertin’, and the significance of ‘materialism’ and ‘atheism’ by which these dramas are characterized. In order to see the differences between Restoration Drama and the plays that were performed in the early eighteenth century we will then concentrate on the aesthetics of the ‘Sentimental Comedy’, for example on George Farquhar’s The Constant Couple (1699) and Richard Steele’s The Tender Husband (1705) and The Conscious Lovers (1722).
