Contents
As perhaps no other writer, James Joyce represents English modernist writing. In his collection of short stories Dubliners (1914), Joyce presents sophisticated portraits of men and women who live in the Irish metropolis. We will analyse the stories against the backdrop of typical political and aesthetic ideas cherished by Joyce at this time. The Interpretation of Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) will help us to understand the roots of his aesthetic thinking which led to the concept of his allotropic writing. We will also try to see in which way Joyce’s famous technique of creating literary epiphanies was inspired by the ideas of Thomas of Aquinas. We will then read several episodes taken from Joyce’s Ulysses (1922) and study their innovative and experimental nature.
