Contents
Dynamical processes and time-dependent phenomena are of importance in many areas of physics. Examples include laser-induced motion of electrons in atoms, molecules and solids, the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in ultracold gases as well as energy-transfer processes in photosynthetic complexes. Thereby, quantum effects such as tunneling or interference are often of significant importance. With ultrashort laser pulses, it is possible to monitor ultrafast processes occurring on femto- or attosecond time scales.
In this seminar, theoretical concepts to describe dynamical processes in quantum systems will be discussed and used to study time-dependent phenomena for selected examples. Starting point is the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, which provides the basic theory for dynamical processes in quantum systems. Solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in the form of wave packets are closely related to classical trajectories and allow a more intuitive understanding of quantum mechanics than stationary solutions of the Schrödinger equation. Considering representative examples, phenomena such as dispersion, tunneling or recurrences will be investigated. Furthermore, advanced quantum dynamical methods, such as density matrix theory, numerical methods, path integrals and semiclassical approaches will be discussed, which allow the study of complex quantum systems including phenomena such as relaxation and decoherence.
