Prerequisites / Organisational information
This course is aimed at students of the Faculty of Engineering of all disciplines and is suitable as an elective subject in the Bachelor's and Master's degree.

Analysis (especially vector analysis), linear algebra

Contents
Methods of nonlinear optimization, combinatorial optimization and theoretical background.
Engineers typically design and improve systems. Optimization methods help to identify interesting alternatives in this process. So optimization can be seen as a tool for decision support. In mathematical terms, optimization (or mathematical programming) is the study of maximizing or minimizing functions subject to specific boundary conditions or constraints. At the end of this course, students should
  • know the different types of problems in unconstrainded and constrained optimization

and the corresponding optimality conditions

  • be able to choose a suitable method depending on the type

of the optimization problem

  • know how fast the algorithms converge

  • be able to solve the optimization problems numerically.
