This seminar will explore some of the diverse areas of research in soft matter physics.

Self-assembly of triply-periodic minimal surfaces
Melting in confinement and other phase transitions
Melting in two dimensions (Metropolis Monte Carlo, XY model)
Packing on curved surfaces: Topological defects
Nucleating a crystal (Molecular dynamics)
Liquid/gas transition in a LJ fluid (Wang-Landau)
Percolation: Conductance of carbon nanotube assemblies

Granular Media: Jamming as a phase transition?
Numerical simulation of jammed packings (Lubashevsky-Stillinger)
Imaging granular media by computed tomography
Lernziele und Kompetenzen:
Students
comprehend an interesting physical topic in a short time frame
identify and interpret the appropriate literature
select and organize the relevant information for the presentation
compose a presentation on the topic at the appropriate level for the audience
use the appropriate presentation techniques and tools
criticize and defend the topic in a scientific discussion
