Inhalt:
The course is intended to help you to develop your confidence in using English in the classroom. Closely following the text book, we begin by looking at everyday classroom routines and how to organise and manage your classroom using the target language as opposed to the students’ first language. The course also includes such aspects as using textbooks and working with technology in the classroom. Lots of practical tasks are included to give participants many opportunities to practice using English for organising, giving instructions etc. By the end of the course students should have developed the confidence to use English from start to finish in all of their future lessons as teachers.

Descriptive Phonetics / Phonetics 1: Theory (BE) [SZEADPaP1BETh]

Students who took up their studies before WS 2020/21: Zwischenmodul Language (L-Gym); Vertiefungsmodul Language (UfE). Prerequisite: Basismodul Language.
Inhalt:
Students learn about the sound inventory of English and analyse the sound system from the perspective of German learners of English. They learn about the physiology of sound production as well as phenomena of connected speech such as linking, weakening and assimilation. Students also develop a receptive command of IPA principles and symbols. They contrast native-speaker and non-native-speaker spoken English and can identify common areas of difficulty for learners of English. Students can choose either the American English or British English Descriptive Phonetics / Phonetics 1 lecture on the basis of personal pronunciation and cultural interest. If you identify more strongly with British pronunciation or culture, attend the course taught by Dr. Lorenz (see Sprachkurse in Erlangen). If you identify more strongly with American pronunciation or culture, attend the course taught by Dr. Reif (see Sprachkurse am Campus Regensburger Straße). Both courses will be taught online in winter semester 2022/23, which means that students should choose a lecture based on pronunciation preferences and independent of the lecturers' scheduled locations in Erlangen or Nürnberg.

Descriptive Phonetics / Phonetics 1: Theory is the prerequisite for Practical Phonetics / Phonetics 2/3.

Inhalt:
The course is designed to help students improve in their written and spoken skills in preparation for the final state exams, including (part of) one mock exam. Classes focus on both written and spoken aspects of Landeskunde. These skills include writing about statistics and graphic representations of data, cartoons and other images; writing summaries, personal comments and essays. The course can only be taken once. Attending the course for three or more sessions counts as having completed the course. Students are advised to take this course as late as possible, ideally in the semester before they are due to take their final exams.

Inhalt:
General Language Course II (GLC II) is the second of two integrated language courses to be taken during the first year. The focus of the module is on the development of language skills through collaborative learning strategies, varied oral and written communication tasks, and the study of specific areas of grammar and vocabulary. Students will be supported in further developing their learner autonomy and study skills. As in GLC I, Remedial Verb Grammar Advanced (RMVG-A), an online practice and feedback tool, will form an integral part of the work on grammar (registration details in class). In this second GLC, there will be an increased focus on students’ productive language skills. Tasks will be based on a variety of text types and audio-visual material. GLC II will include discussion of a range of different topics, such as science and technology, controversial issues, the environment and the arts.

Inhalt:
The General Language Course (GLC) I is the first of two integrated language courses to be taken during the first year. The focus of the module is on the development of language skills through collaborative learning strategies, such as speaking tasks, contextualised oral and written communication tasks, and the active use of a range of different media. Using different text types and audio-visual materials, we will cover specific areas of grammar and vocabulary. In addition, there will be activities aimed at helping students develop their learner autonomy and study skills. Students will also work with Remedial Grammar Verb Advanced (RMVG-A), an interactive practice and feedback tool, which forms an integral part of the course (registration details in class).

Inhalt:
In this module, students produce a portfolio of academic writing in English, with a focus on essays, summaries and responses to academic source materials. Students analyse texts and practise critical reading strategies. The development of writing skills includes work on coherence, cohesion, register, linguistic range and accuracy. In addition, students participate in oral tasks on academic topics, such as panel discussions, debates and oral summaries of information from different spoken sources. Students also present and answer questions on information from written sources. Students reflect on their progress.

Inhalt:
The focus will be on both historical and current aspects. Topics include the British / American Context, History, Geography, Government, Education, Religion & Holidays, Politics, Media, Arts & Sports, Cultural Concepts in the UK and the US. Students engage with a very a wide range of course material. They interact with various media sources (both UK and US). By the end of the module students are able to critically evaluate current events as they happen and they can reflect on issues with a good background understanding.

In Practical Phonetics / Phonetics 2/3 students build on their theoretical knowledge of the sound inventory of English acquired in Descriptive Phonetics / Phonetics 1: Theory and analyse the sound system from the perspective of German learners of English. Students put their theoretical knowledge into practice with regular recordings and analyses of their own readings of texts in English. Students gain an awareness of the range and respective severity of typical deviations from standard British and American English pronunciation. Students identify common pronunciation problems for non-native speakers of English as well as their own individual pronunciation difficulties. Students develop their pronunciation on the basis of constructive feedback.

Students put their theoretical knowledge into practice with regular recordings and analyses of their own readings of texts in English. Students gain an awareness of the range and respective severity of typical deviations from standard British and American English pronunciation. Students identify common pronunciation problems for non-native speakers of English as well as their own individual pronunciation difficulties. Students develop their pronunciation on the basis of constructive feedback.

Inhalt:
This course introduces effective strategies for the task of presenting academic topics in English with confidence and fluency. Students practise the process of preparing, delivering and reflecting on academic presentations. Members of the course participate in discussions following presentations and peer review each other’s work.

Inhalt:
In Speaking Skills, students practice the skills involved in spontaneous language production and discussion activities based on varied subjects and materials. Students interact in groups of varying sizes while working on a range of communicative oral tasks. Students reflect on their progress. Students gain the confidence to engage in spontaneous speech with others and an understanding of the demands of verbal interactions with a number of participants. Students increase the fluency, accuracy and lexical range of their spoken English. They self-assess the development of their oral skills.

Inhalt:
The translation course will introduce some basic techniques in English-German translation. We will devote a considerable amount of time to a variety of translation-related issues, such as the question of what makes a good translation or how literal a translation should be. Participants will be required to give a presentation regarding typical areas of difficulty, such as how to translate participle constructions or how to deal with culture-specific concepts. In addition, students will be required to translate several texts, which will then be discussed in class.

Inhalt:
Students learn and practice coherence and cohesion, style, vocabulary, and grammar. Students develop a portfolio of their work to keep track of their progress. They practice stylistically adequate written communication across a range of genres, they peer review other students’ work, and they receive feedback through continuous assessment. Students produce a portfolio of complex texts in a range of genres, developing an awareness of stylistic appropriateness. Students review and revise written work on the basis of feedback.
