XCube

Data warehouse systems have spread enormously over the last few years. They have become the central database for analytical purposes in enterprises. The original idea of a single enterprise data warehouse does not reflect reality. Often there are several different data warehouse systems within an enterprise introduced for different departments or different purposes (e.g. CRM or MIS). Mergers or cooperations of enterprises result in a heterogeneous set of several data warehouses in contradiction to the original philosophy of warehousing. Integrating or creating federations of existing data warehouses is therefore of high interest in practice. To cope with this integration task it is essential to do research on the exchange of data warehouse data cubes. For this purpose the XML-based format ‘XCube’ has been developed. XCube is a family of meta formats for describing data cubes, dimensions, nodes, and the content of data cubes. XCube is highly compatible with the Common Warehouse Metamodel (CWM).
