RETAVIC - Real-Time Audio-Video Conversion

The goal of the RETAVIC project is to develop a real-time audio-video conversion that can extend the functionality of available (or newly developed) multimedia servers (MMS) and multimedia database management systems (MMDBMS) allowing them to provide a format-independent audio-video content to end-user regardless the internal storage format. This will provide the data independence, which is one of the foundations of the database management systems, in such a way that the format of served audio-video streams is prepared on-the-fly depending on the client desires for specific characteristics imposed also by the client’s resources (e.g. available equipment, network connection or used applications).
The conversion of the multimedia data has to be executed in real-time in order to lower the storage requirements and delays in delivery. Moreover, the multimedia data is continuous and thus it heavily depends on time (time-dependent) of processing as well as of presentation. Additionally, Quality-of-Service (QoS) support can be provided when the whole server-side part works in the appropriate and reliable system. Till now only real-time systems can provide such a service of applications that allows for managing and controlling processes with a requested quality of the execution. So, the designed (and eventually implemented) audio-video converters have to work in real-time environment (RTE) or in other words in a real-time operating system (RTOS), and thus very complex algorithms of the audio- and video-processing have to be adapted to the chosen RTE.
