Tissue Perfusion Quantification with C-arm CT

Quantification of the cerebral blood flow (perfusion) inside the brain is a well-established procedure for stroke diagnosis that is currently performed using computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this project the use of a C-arm angiographic system (C-arm CT) is investigated to quantify perfusion. 

With this imaging modality tomographic images can be acquired shortly ahead, during and after the intervention when the patient is positioned on the treatment table. There are huge potential benefits with this technique when diagnosing stroke: Less resources are blocked because no CT or MRI scanner is needed and, most of all, the time interval between the scan and the start of the therapy can be reduced significantly. 

The aim of this project is to develop novel dynamic reconstruction algorithms for perfusion imaging that can be used with slowly rotating scanners like C-arm CT scanners. Also iterative, Compressed Sensing based algorithms are studied, particularly to reduce the X-ray dose to the patient.
