Phonation, articulation, and prosody analysis of speech of people with Parkinson’s disease in pre-clinics and advanced stages

General Aim To analyze, characterize, and quantify the affection on phonation, articulation, and prosody due to the presence of the disease, in order to develop computational-aided tools to help in the diagnosis and assessment of people with PD.

Specific Aims

To analyze and implement measurements for the assessment of the phonation, articulation, and prosodic capability of people with PD.
To develop methods able to classify between patients with PD and age-matched healthy controls.
To develop methods able to predict the neurological state of PD patients according to the motor section of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS-III).
To develop a computer-aided tool for the assessment of the speech of people with PD.
To study and determine possible patterns in speech to predict the risk of people to develop PD due to specific genetics condition.

Population to be Studied
Inherited Parkinson: people carrying a mutation on the PARKIN gen, and exhibiting symptoms of the PD.
Relatives of Inherited Parkinson: relatives of people carrying a mutation of PARKIN, but without any symptom of PD.
Idiopathic Parkinson: people already diagnosed with PD but not carrying any mutation.
Control: people without any sign of PD or any other neurological disorder and dementia.

Expected Results
To identify speech patterns as possible bio-markers of PD in a pre-clinics stage.
A computer-aided tool for the automatic assessment of speech of people with PD.
