The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is one of five Departments of the Technische Fakultät (School of Engineering Sciences) of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. While the latter was founded already in 1743, the School of Engineering Sciences (founded in 1966) is much younger. Till today, the School of Engineering Sciences pursues the goal to train and educate the students to become engineers with a strong foundation in natural sciences and technology (“der naturwissenschaftlich gebildete Ingenieur”). The five Departments are:
a) Chemical and Bio-Engineering (Chemie und Bio-Ingenieurwesen)
b) Electrical, Electronic and Communications Engineering (Elektrotechnik, Elektronik und Informationstechnik)
c) Mechanical Engineering (Maschinenbau)
d) Computer Sciences (Informatik)
e) Materials Science and Engineering (Werkstoffwissenschaften)
The students graduate with the academic degree "Diplomingenieur" or "Diplominformatiker" after a study of 5 years or more. After the Diplom degree, highly qualified graduates can enter the doctorate programme. Until recently, the Diplom degree was the only academic degree conferred by the School. In the last few years, new curricula leading to Bachelor and Master degrees were introduced increasingly.
Structure:
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering consists of 7 Institutes with a staff of 14 professors and two readers (Privatdozent: PD). It is managed by the Board of Directors, which consists of the directors of the individual instituts.

Forschungsschwerpunkte

A special feature of the Department is its broad spectrum of research activities and know-how, covering most of the material classes, and extending from material modification, processing and characterization to application in technical devices and systems.
The research activities of the Department will be presented in detail in the subsequent sections by each Institute. Quite a few topics and materials of technological importance combine interest and expertise of more than one of the Institutes and are subjects of co-operation, common projects and common use of facilities.
These topics include:
• composite materials with metallic and ceramic matrices as well as metal-polymer-composites
• ceramic high-temperature materials
• polymer ceramics
• flow behaviour of ceramic suspensions
• metallic and other foams
• ultrafine-grained metals and alloys
• metallic high-temperature materials of the aerospace and power industry
• bio-compatible materials on the basis of ceramics, metals and polymers
• diamond- and diamond-like protection layers
• materials for digital storage devices
• common aspects of crystal growth and directional solidification
• bulk crystals and thin films of large band gap semiconductors

Wissenschaftliche Tagungen

On July 6, 2001, the Department held its annual Erlanger Werkstofftag, a Symposium with eight lectures, of which three were held by the recipients of awards for scientific excellence. Another lecture was given by Professor Schmuki, the new head of the Institute IV (Surface Science and Corrosion), who introduced his new fields of research to the audience of some 150 current and former members of the Department.
On September 27 and 28, 2001, the 4th Erlanger Kunststofftage were held in Erlangen. This regular Symposium on Polymers, organized jointly by Institute V (Polymer Materials) of Professor Münstedt and the Institute of Polymer Technology of Professor Ehrenstein in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was attended by about 100 participants from industry and universities.
On October 12, 2001, a special Symposium on Polymers was held in honor of Professor Münstedt on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
