Mathematical Optimization in Communications and Signal Processing (MathOpt)5 ECTS
(englische Bezeichnung: Mathematical Optimization in Communications and Signal Processing)
(Prüfungsordnungsmodul: Mathematical Optimization in Communications and Signal Processing)

Modulverantwortliche/r: Frauke Liers
Lehrende: Frauke Liers

Startsemester: WS 2017/2018Dauer: 1 SemesterTurnus: jährlich (WS)
Präsenzzeit: 45 Std.Eigenstudium: 105 Std.Sprache: Englisch

Lehrveranstaltungen:

Empfohlene Voraussetzungen:

A bachelor course in Mathematics for Engineers. Recommended are 3-4 courses in Mathematics for Engineers.

Inhalt:

The focus of this module is on methods for modeling and solving optimization problems as they occur in the field communication and signal processing. Starting from practical applications, different classes of optimization problems are introduced that include linear, mixed-integer linear, continuous non-linear as well as mixed-integer non-linear optimization problems. Advantages and disadvantages of different modeling techniques will be outlined and different reformulations will be presented in order to achieve efficient solution approaches. Students will learn how to present optimization results properly as well as how to interpret and evaluate these results for practical applications in communications and signal processing.

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

The students
a) have an overview over mathematical optimization in practice
b) apply mathematical optimization modeling and solution techniques
c) decide which solution approaches are suitable for which class of models
d) know available software and how to use it

Bemerkung:

Teaching is in English only. In the exam, each student can choose between English and German.
