Content:
In the first part of the course, mobile communication networks will be discussed according to the current standards Long Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE Advanced (LTE-A), respectively, which will form the basis for the next, fifth generation of systems (5G), the realization of which is expected from 2020 onwards. The main focus of the course will be on methods and concepts that meet the requirements of 5G networks such as ultra-high data rates, extremely low latencies and the handling of a variety of terminals and nodes (Internet of Things). In particular, we study transmission systems with a high number of antennas (massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems), novel modulation and coding methods, heterogeneous networks with radio cells of different sizes, cloud-based system concepts as well as transmission methods for higher frequency bands (millimeter waves band, Terahertz band, infrared band and visible light).

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

Goals:
The students
• learn about the principles of LTE and LTE-A,
• discuss the main requirements for 5G and Internet of Things systems,
• analyze massive MIMO communication systems with respect to their channel capacity and reliability,
• characterize novel modulation and coding schemes,
• describe heterogenous networks,
• evaluate cloud-based system concepts,
• study concepts for a transmission in higher frequency bands such as the mmWave or THz band.
