Course description
Virtual and Augment Reality (VR/AR) are on the rise. While in the 1980s, VR was more science-fiction than actual reality, recents years showed major advances in hardware and software technology: Today, VR/AR has matured and starts to influence our lives, paving the way to novel concepts in entertainment, engineering, education and science. Besides vision, sound has a very important role in making these simulations authentic.
This course provides an introduction into the simulation of sound in Virtual and Augment Reality, covering topics from multiple disciplines: physics, signal processing, mathematics and computer science. It starts with general overview on relevant acoustical phaenomena and the underlying theory; it considers the human perception, particularly the localization of sound; it reviews established simulation algorithms and it discusses real-time implementations using efficient signal processing algorithms.
The course is an ideal start for researchers, engineers, and graduate students to dive deeper into the field of Virtual Reality with focus on sound.
Relation to other courses
This course is the most advanced course offered by the university on this topic, and serves as an excellent basis from which to commence research in the area. Various aspects of the course bring students up to date with the very latest developments in the field. This course builds on Sprach- und Audiosignalverarbeitung and Digitale Signalverarbeitung (both by Prof. Kellermann). It connects well to the course Music Processing - Synthesis (by Mr. Schäfer) and enhances the course Virtual Vision (by Dr. Herglotz) into the field of acoustics.

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

The students:

  • Know the key principles of Virtual Reality (VR) and the particular requirements of simulating sound in VR

  • Learn the required fundamental acoustic theory, such as sound waves, radiation, propagation, measurements and descriptors/units

  • Understand the human auditory perception and sound localization (binaural cues)

  • Become able to design computer and signal processing algorithms that can interactively render sound sources in real-time

  • Understand and differentiate numerical and geometrical simulation techniques for sound propagation, evaluate their complexity and select the suitable technique for an application

  • Know how moving sound sources and listeners can be mathematically described, physically simulated and rendered in real-time

  • Learn about spatial sound reproduction using headphones and loudspeakers, become able to implement such techniques

  • Understand the programming and implementation challenges of VR systems (latencies, parallelism, updates) and solutions to these
