Inhalt:

The advanced thematic seminar addresses key questions of American literary studies through exemplary cases. Potential fields covered are:

• Literary discourse viewed through the lens of theoretical approaches

• Cultural evaluation and reception of literary texts, processes of canonization

• History of genre (forms and functions)

• Literary and cultural memory

• Ethics and aesthetics

• Medial aspects of literary and cultural studies; changes in mediality, intermediality, the cultural impact of electronic media and digitalization

• Transculturation, creolization, hybridity in North American literatures
  

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

Students acquire currency in a second thematic field within American literary studies and with relevance to contemporary research; they practice their ability to work critically and independently in compliance with academic standards, which they test by writing a short scholarly presentation and a final seminar paper. The Independent Study prepares students for their work towards a master’s thesis and trains them in academic methodology and argumentation.
