Inhalt:

The advanced thematic seminar addresses key questions of American cultural studies by studying exemplary cultural phenomena. Possible fields of study:

• North American concepts of identity and alterity (categories of difference such as class, gender, ethnicity, nationality, age, or sexuality)

• Processes of stereotyping

• Popular culture and cultural practices generating hierarchies

• The spatial and temporal dimension of culture; constructions of space and place; memorial cultures of North America

• Transculturation, creolization, hybridization in North American cultures
  

Lernziele und Kompetenzen:

Students acquire knowledge and competence in a second thematic field of current American cultural studies (recent research agendas); they practice their analytical skills in doing independent academic work: they write a short scholarly presentation and a final seminar paper. The Independent Study prepares students for working on their master’s thesis and trains their academic proficiency.
