Inhalt
In response to the sweeping political and social changes occurring on the MENA, comprehending how “Islamists” frame their ideology and attempt to shape individuals, societies, state as well as international policies is vital. “Islamists” from the Muslim Brotherhood to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria have engaged in a cycle of contentious politics challenging state and non-state actors, often with the aim of regime change or fundamental political and economic reforms. This course is designed to analyze, interpret and explain how the Arab media is discussing and introducing the “Islamists” internal dynamics and developments, as well as their perception of political, social and religious conflicts that have emerged after the Arab Uprisings. We will also examine how the media constructs the category of “Islamists,” what political purpose this category serves, and what are some of the problems it raises and nuances that it erases.
During our seminar, we will read and analyze short original Arabic texts (approximately 300 words, see example below) published by Arab newspapers and media outlets such as Al-Jazeera, Al-Arabiya, Al-Ahram, Al-Masrey Al-Youm, Ad Dustour, Alghad, Al-Akhbar, Al-Safir, Al-Quds, Al-Ayyam, Al-Watan, Al-Hayat, and others. The written texts and discussion will only be in Arabic but each student’s level of Arabic and the individual needs will be taken in consideration and addressed. Our focus will not be on grammar or sentence structure. Instead, we will give special attention to understanding Arabic texts and developing our ability to use them in our study of the MENA.
